"The 22 passengers aboard the AMSTERDAM included admiraal Adriaan Valkenier with 5 servants and 13 lijfschutten (bodyguards). At the Cape this former Gouverneur-Generaal was arrested; he was accused by the future G.-G. Van Imhoff of being responsible for the notorious 'Chinese Murders' in Batavia in 1740. In August, 1742, Valkenier was transported back to Batavia (see 3241). The AMSTERDAM was wrecked off the Shetland Islands."
